Aurora Innovation (AUR), the self-driving truck maker, opened up trading today up 44%.
The reason behind the surge is that Aurora announced a strategic partnership with Nvidia to help deploy self-driving trucks at scale. Nvidia will implement its DRIVE Thor system-on-a-chip (SoC) in Aurora vehicles.
CEO of Aurora Chris Urmson said, "Nvidia is the market leader in accelerated computing, and they’ll strengthen our ecosystem of partners and our ability to deliver safe and reliable driverless trucks to our customers at scale."
Autonomous trucking has been a hot topic in the logistics industry for the past few years. The debate often rages on whether self-driving trucks can actually replace drivers. I still believe we are several years away from that being a reality.
With that being said, this partnership with Nvidia, the leading AI chip maker, will likely accelerate this timeline.
