From Super Bowl Star to Freight Brokerage CEO: Desmond Clark

In this week’s episode of The FreightCaviar Podcast, we sit down with Desmond Clark, President of Bear Down Logistics, and former NFL player. We caught up with Desmond on his business. He also discusses strategies for maximizing productivity, talks value of quality over quantity, and the importance of taking a moment for yourself each day.

Things have changed a bit at the company since we last spoke with Desmond in March 2023. He started by updating us on the latest adjustments he has made to get the most out of his workday.

“I was spending three, four hours a day trying to figure out accounting. That was the first thing that I outsourced. It cost a little bit of money, but now I’m only looking at my finances once a month, it takes me thirty minutes.”

The Importance of Taking Time for Yourself

Running a business can easily turn into a never-ending whirlwind of calls and meetings. Desmond shared his insights on the importance of having a moment to yourself during the day. This, he says, is crucial for refocusing.

“When the storm is calm inside of me, I get so much more stuff done. Being able to be still for a little while, just bring everything back in and lock everything that’s out there out for fifteen, thirty minutes a day, it rivals a workout.”

Lessons from The Great Game of Business

We also talked about books. He shared one of his favorites with us: The Great Game of Business by Jack Stack. It not only changed his outlook on running a business but also ended up saving him money in the long run and led him to switch to working remotely.

“I realized I was spending a whole lot of money that I wasn’t getting a return on. That was one of the reasons why we went fully remote. We had an office, paying $2500 a month, and there were only three people there. Everybody else was remote.”

Quality Over Quantity

Desmond also emphasized the importance of quality over quantity when it comes to getting tasks done. While many people focus on the number of things they can check off of their list, he suggests focusing on finishing two or three things you really need to get done– and doing them well.

“It’s all about the quality of work. In a day you can probably get two to three really important things done, at most. Just slow down. The stuff that you need to get done that day, make that high quality.”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

When asked to share the most important piece of advice he’s ever received on starting a business, and this is what Desmond had to say:

“The difficult part is that you’re dealing with real people. You’re looking at numbers but those numbers aren’t talking about people. At the end of the day, if you don’t protect your business, you won’t have any people to care about.”

It's people like Desmond, with their passion and energy, that make the industry a better place.
