Inside Mexico’s Cross-Border Freight Boom

In April, we went to Guadalajara—Mexico’s “Silicon Valley”—to uncover the real story behind cross-border freight. The city is becoming a hub for nearshoring and logistics, with more than 70 U.S. companies opening in Jalisco last year alone.

What we found:

How brokers break in → “The first thing is to go ask if they have cross-border freight,” said Matt Silver, Co-Founder & CEO of Cargado. “You have to actually go ask for it.”
When to scale → “Before you hire a Mexico operations leader, invest in actually finding and moving freight. Once it’s 10–20 loads a day, then you hire,” Silver added.
Why security still matters → Some loads still move under Mexican army escort, underscoring the risks in high-value sectors like automotive and pharma.
